1966 Ford Mustang 6 Cylinder Heater Hose Installation

The 1966 Ford Mustang was equipped with a mechanically operated heater assembly mounted underneath the dash panel and behind the glove box. Attached to the assembly are three cables that direct the air to the desired vents. The heater assembly receives hot water from the engine via two hoses to produce heat. When the hoses crack, antifreeze will leak into the interior of the car. Unfortunately, the heater assembly must be removed to replace the hoses, but the entire process is fairly straightforward and should take approximately one hour to complete.

Tools Used: Wrench, Container, Screwdriver, Socket wrench, Antifreeze

Install Heater Hose

Removing the Old Heater Hoses

Disconnect the battery ground cable with a wrench. Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator with a wrench and allow the antifreeze to drain into a container.

Remove the three screws that secure the bottom of the glove box door to the dash panel, then open the glove box and lift it away to expose the heater's three control cables and two defrost hoses.

Lift the tip of each of the heater's three control cables off the linkages on the heater box. Lift the two defrost hoses off the heater box.

Trace the two heater hoses from the engine side of the firewall to the engine. One hose attaches to the water pump and one hose attaches to the intake manifold. Loosen the clamps that secure the hoses to the engine with a screwdriver, and pull the hoses away from the engine.

Unplug the heater's two electrical wires located against the firewall. The wires attach to the back of the heater's blower motor.

Remove the nuts that secure the heater assembly to the dash panel, using a socket wrench. Pull the heater away from the dash panel while guiding the two heater hoses through the firewall.

Loosen the clamps that secure the two heater hoses to the back of the heater assembly, using a screwdriver, and pull the hoses off the assembly.

Installing the New Heater Hoses

Press the new heater hoses onto the fittings on the back of the heater assembly and tighten the hose clamps with a screwdriver to secure the hoses in place.

Feed the two heater hoses through the firewall from the interior of the car. Position the heater assembly against the dash panel and tighten the assembly's nuts with a socket wrench.

Press the two defrost hoses onto the heater box. Lower the heater's three control cables onto their linkages on the heater box. Position the glove box against the dash panel and tighten its three screws with a screwdriver to secure the glove box in place.

Plug the heater's two electrical wires into the back of the heater's blower motor from the engine side of the firewall. Press the two heater hoses onto their ports on the engine and tighten the hose clamps with a screwdriver.

Tighten the radiator's drain plug with a wrench and fill the radiator with antifreeze through the radiator cap opening. Attach the battery ground cable to the battery with a wrench.
