1966 Ford Mustang Harmonic Balancer Replacement

Tools Used: Wrench, Socket Wrench, Harmonic Balancer Puller, Torque Wrench

Replace Harmonic Balancer

Loosen the two alternator adjustment bolts with a wrench. One bolt is located at the top of the front alternator, and one bolt is located at the bottom of the front of the alternator. The alternator is located on the left side at the front of the engine, next to the valve cover.

Rotate the alternator towards the engine to slacken its belt then lift the belt off of the pulley attached to the front of the harmonic balancer.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to remove the power steering pump's belt from the harmonic balancer pulley if the engine is so equipped.

Remove the retaining bolts from the center of the harmonic balancer pulley with a socket wrench then remove the pulley.

Remove the bolt and washer located in the center of the balancer with the socket wrench.

Attach a balancer puller to the face of the balancer then use the tool to remove the balancer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for attaching and using the puller as not all puller tools are designed the same way. Generally speaking, the puller either bolts to the face of the balancer or attaches to the back of the balancer. A large bolt in the center of the puller is then turned in a clockwise direction with a wrench to disconnect the balancer from the crankshaft.

Inspect the tip of the crankshaft to locate the metal key which runs along the length of the tip of the crankshaft.

Inspect the large hole in the center of the replacement balancer to find the slot through which the metal key on the crankshaft slides.

Position the replacement balancer onto the crankshaft so that the slot in the balancer aligns with the key on the tip of the crankshaft.

Slide the balancer's washer onto the threaded end of the balancer's bolt, then install and tighten the bolt to between 85 and 100 ft.-lbs. of torque with a torque wrench.

Position the balancer's pulley onto the face of the balancer, then install and tighten the pulley's bolts to between 70 and 90 ft.-lbs. of torque with a torque wrench.

Insert the alternator and, if so equipped, the power steering pump belt into their respective grooves within the balancer pulley.

Pull the alternator away from the engine until its belt is snug then tighten the alternator's bolts. Repeat the process for the power steering pump's belt.
