1966 Ford Mustang Steering Wheel Removal Instructions

The 1966 Mustang was a breakthrough car for Ford, and helped start the muscle car wars of the 1960s and 1970s. With a car of this age, parts start to break down and need restoration, including the steering wheel. Removing the wheel to either restore the current one or replace it with a new model isn't difficult, and can be done in approximately 30 minutes with the right tools.

Tools Used: 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set, Steering wheel puller

Remove Steering Wheel

Push the chrome horn ring in towards the center of the steering wheel, turn it counterclockwise approximately 45 degrees then pull it off of the steering wheel.

Unbolt the steering wheel from the steering column using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.

Install the steering wheel puller onto the center of the wheel. Thread the side bolts from the steering wheel puller into the two bolts flanking where the center nut was on the steering column. Then tighten down the center bolt on the puller using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket until the steering wheel pops off of the column.

Tips & Warnings

Steering wheel pullers are inexpensive tools, typically under $20 to purchase. However, some auto parts stores will rent tools for the day for a low price if you don't think you'll need the tool again.
