1966 Ford Mustang Temperature Sender Installation Instructions

It is important to distinguish between a temperature sensor and a sender when ordering one for a 1966 Mustang. They install in the same place and manner, however they operate differently. A sender is used with a gauge that measures engine temperature while a sensor simply turns a red coolant temperature warning light on. The sender can be either electrical or mechanical while the sensor is strictly electrical.

Tools Used: Drain pan, Set of wrenches, Antifreeze, Pliers

Install Temperature Sender

Place the drain pan under the radiator drain. Open the drain using the pliers and allow the radiator antifreeze to drain. Close the drain and tighten slightly with the pliers.

Remove the electrical wire from the top of the sender. The sender will be located either on the top front of the intake manifold next to the thermostat housing or on the driver's side of the block below the exhaust manifold.

Remove the sensor using a wrench to turn it counterclockwise. Install the new sender by threading it in clockwise and tightening it with a wrench. Install the electrical connector on the top of the sender. Fill the radiator with antifreeze.
