1971 Ford Mustang Rear Axle Removal Instructions

Ford's 1971 Mustang is equipped with either an 8- or 9-inch differential. Both differential assemblies feature a removable carrier, which houses the ring gear and the pinion gear as well as a number of seals and bearings. To service the differential carrier, it must be removed from the differential housing. To remove the carrier from the housing, the axle shafts must first be removed. Fortunately, removing the axles takes only a few minutes, and the process is the same for both the 8- or 9-inch differentials.

Tools Used: Wrench, Jack, Jack stands, Socket wrench

Remove Rear Axle

Loosen the roadwheel lug nuts with a wrench.

Position the lift point of a jack underneath the center of the differential, then lift the Mustang with the jack until the back tires lift off of the ground and lower the Mustang onto jack stands.

Remove the roadwheel lug nuts.

Pull the wheel off of the end of the axle shaft to expose the brake drum.

Release the parking brake, then pull the brake drum off of the axle shaft.

Remove the four axle retaining nuts that secure the axle to the end of the axle shaft with a socket wrench. Access the nuts by inserting a socket connected to a socket wrench through the hole at the tip of the axle shaft. Rotate the axle shaft until its hole aligns with each nut to access all four nuts.

Pull the axle out of the differential.
