How to Adjust the Idle on a 1978 Chevrolet Impala

The idle set screw in the carburetor controls the idle speed on a 1978 Chevrolet Impala. If the idle speed is left too high, your Impala will seem to race at idle, wasting fuel and putting unnecessary strain on the transmission when shift into gear. If you set it too low, the Impala will often stall out when shifted into gear as the added strain of turning the transmission gears falls on the engine. Adjust the idle speed is quick and easy for anyone who knows their way around a screwdriver.

Tools Used: Screwdriver

Adjust the Idle

Start the Impala's engine. Open the hood and support it with the hood prop.

Remove the retaining nut from the Impala's air cleaner lid by hand. Lift the air cleaner lid off the air cleaner assembly by hand.

Remove the air cleaner assembly from the top of the Impala's engine manually.

Turn the idle speed adjustment screw, located in the front of the carburetor to adjust the idle speed. Turn the screw clockwise to raise the speed and counterclockwise to lower it. Check the Impala's tachometer to verify the idle speed is set between 1200 and 1700 RPMs.

Reinstall the air cleaner assembly by hand. Close the Impala's hood and turn off the engine.
