How to Adjust the Idle on a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1978 Camaro engine receives its fuel through a carburetor. Depending on the model of the Camaro, this carburetor is either a two- or a four-barrel model. The carburetor sits atop the intake manifold and receives fuel through the fuel lines, which carry fuel from the fuel tank. The carburetor's job is to control the air and fuel mixture as it enters the intake manifold. The rate at which the fuel and air flow through the carburetor determines the engine idle speed.

Tools Used: Screwdriver,

Adjust the Idle

Start the engine and open the hood of the Camaro.

Remove the air cleaner assembly by taking the wing nut off the top of the air cleaner lid, pulling the crankcase hose off the side of the air cleaner housing and then lifting the whole air cleaner assembly off the carburetor, by hand.

Locate the idle control screw on the side of the carburetor body. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle speed or counter-clockwise to lower the idle speed, using the screwdriver.

Listen to the engine idle as you adjust the screw, to know whether it is idling faster or slower than you desire, and adjust accordingly. If your Camaro has a tachometer, it's best to set the idle speed between 1,200 and 1,250 RPMs.

Reinstall the air cleaner assembly in reverse order of the removal procedure and close the hood.
