How to Change Window Motor on 1978 Lincoln Mark V

The 1978 Mark V was the height of luxury for American production cars when Lincoln introduced the sedan. One of the features the Mark V had that most cars of the day did not was power windows. While power windows are a great luxury when they work properly, they're not so enjoyable when the motor breaks down. If a power window on your Lincoln Mark V no longer works, and you have basic automotive-repair experience, you can change the motor yourself and save the labor charge for more enjoyable expenditures.

Tools Used: Phillips screwdriver, Trim tool, Packing tape, Socket set

Change Window Motor

Remove the screws from the door panel with your Phillips screwdriver.

Slip the end of the trim tool under the lower, trailing edge of the door panel and pry the trim pin located there out of the door. Move around the door panel perimeter and pry the rest of the trim pins loose with the trim tool in the same manner.

Lift the door panel up and off the door by hand. Set the panel against the door and reach behind it to disconnect the power window and lock wiring harnesses from the switches by hand. Move the panel away from the door when done.

Push the window glass to the top of the window frame by hand. Hold it in place while you tape the glass to the top of the window frame with packing tape to prevent the glass from dropping when you release it.

Unbolt the window motor from the regulator and door support with your socket set. Pull the motor out by hand and disconnect the wiring harness from the base of the motor by hand.

Insert the new motor and bolt it to the door support and window regulator with your socket set. Plug the wiring harness into the new motor by hand.

Reinstall the door panel in reverse of how you removed it. Use the side of your fist to pound the trim pins back into the door. Remove the packing tape.
