The 1967 Ford Mustang is available with optional power assisted front disc brakes. Power assist is provided by means of a vacuum booster, which uses engine vacuum to amplify input from the brake pedal. Power assist systems are similar on most vehicles, with the vacuum booster mounted between the brake master cylinder and brake pedal. A bad brake booster should be replaced immediately. It presents a safety hazard when driving by making the brake pedal extremely hard to push down.
Tools Used: Wrench set, Ratchet and socket set
Fit Brake Booster
Park the Mustang on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake.
Remove the vacuum hose from the check valve on the brake booster. If it has a hose clamp on it use a slotted screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp.
Use a wrench to remove the two brake lines from the master cylinder. Use a wrench to remove the two nuts that attach the brake master cylinder to the studs on the brake booster. Pull the master cylinder off of the studs and set aside.
Move to the driver's side of the passenger compartment and slide the seat all the way back. You're going to have to lay on your side, on the floorboard. Find where the brake booster is attached to the firewall bracket with four bolts. There is a rod coming out of the booster that attaches to the brake pedal. Remove the clip from the pin that slides through the brake booster rod and the brake pedal. Slide out the pin and bushing.
Use a ratchet and socket to remove the four bolts that hold the booster onto the firewall. Move back to the engine compartment and pull the booster out of the firewall and remove it.
Mount the new booster in the firewall and line up the bolt holes. Move back to the passenger compartment and install and tighten the four bolts. Slide the bushing into the brake pedal and line up the brake booster rod with the brake pedal. Insert the pin and attach the clip.
Mount the brake master cylinder onto the brake booster. Attach and tighten the two nuts that hold the master cylinder onto the booster. Reattach and tighten the two brake lines. Reattach the vacuum hose to the check valve on the booster.
