How to Hook Up Battery on 1978 Ford F250 Pickup

Installing a battery in a 1978 Ford F-250 is a straightforward procedure. The battery provides electrical power to the starter to crank the truck. A faulty battery will not allow the truck to start and should be replaced immediately. The engine compartment has a designated area for the battery and the cables are long enough to properly mount on to the terminals. The automotive parts store can tell you which specific batteries are compatible with a Ford F-250.

Tools Used: Socket wrench, Socket set

Hook Up Battery

Open the hood for battery installation. Locate the passenger side of the engine compartment at the front. Place the battery on the metal tray provided to secure the battery in place. Bolt in the retaining rod by hand. Turn the top of the rod until it secures the battery in place.

Mount the positive cable on to the terminal designated with a "+" symbol. The cable will be red and the other end will be bolted to the starter. Tighten the cable down on the terminal with a socket wrench.

Repeat the previous step to install the negative or ground cable. Tighten the cable on to the terminal to ensure a solid connection.

Start the truck to ensure the battery is working. The truck will not start if the battery is weak or is not holding a charge.

Tips & Warnings

Purchase the battery at any automotive parts store. Use caution when working around the electrical system. Do not allow the positive and negative cable to touch as this could cause an arc and possible electrocution.
