How to Install Brake Booster on 1969 Chevrolet Corvette

The 1969 Chevrolet Corvette has four-wheel power disc brakes. Power assist is provided by a vacuum booster that is installed between the master cylinder and the brake pedal. When your power booster goes bad, you will experience an extremely hard brake pedal. You will have to press down very hard on the pedal to get the Corvette to stop. Fortunately, the booster is fairly easy to replace, even if you are a home mechanic.

Tools Used: Ratchet and socket set, Needle-nose pliers

Install Brake Booster

Park the Corvette on a firm, paved surface and set the parking brake.

Move to the engine compartment and pull the vacuum hose off of the vacuum booster. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the two nits that hold the master cylinder onto the vacuum booster. Carefully pull the master cylinder away from the studs on the booster.

Move to the driver's side of the passenger compartment. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter pin from the pin that connects the brake pedal to the vacuum booster pushrod. Remove the pin.

Use a ratchet and socket to remove the two nuts that hold the booster to the firewall. Move to the engine compartment and remove the booster.

Mount the new booster onto the firewall. Move to the passenger compartment and install and tighten the two nuts. Attach the brake pedal to the booster push rod and insert the pin and cotter pin. Move to the engine compartment and mount the master cylinder onto the booster. Install and tighten the nuts. Push the vacuum hose onto the booster.
