How to Install a Fuel Filter on a 1977 Buick Regal

The fuel filter filters out particulate matter that may damage your 1977 Buick Regal as the fuel passes through it. It is a small component in the engine that is inexpensive, only $10 to $20, but it can save you thousands in repair costs if changed frequently (every two to four months). The fuel filter is a simple piece to change by the at-home mechanic.

Tools Used: Open-end wrenches, Screwdriver, Rags, Safety goggles

Install a Fuel Filter

Put on your safety goggles. This is the most important step. Protecting your eyes from gas is essential.

Locate the fuse that runs your fuel pump. This information can be found in your owner’s manual, which comes with the Regal.

Start the engine and the remove the fuel pump fuse. This should kill the engine. This helps to remove most of the pressure from the fuel lines.

Locate the fuel filter. The fuel filter is located near the fuel tank, near the rear wheel well.

Remove the fuel lines from the filter. The fuel lines are attached to the filter by fittings. These fittings can be removed from the filter using the open end wrenches. Before removing the fittings, place the rag over the fittings, to prevent gas from spraying on you.

Remove the fuel filter. the fuel filter is held on by a clip on the back of it that can be removed with the screwdriver.

Install the new filter. The filter goes in the reverse order of removal. Make sure all of the fittings are tight before starting the car. After starting the car, watch for leaks for three minutes to make sure everything is tight.
