Installing a fuel tank in a 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a straightforward task. The designated area in the back already has the holes cut out for the straps. The fuel lines and electrical lines are already positioned. The new fuel tank can be secured under the carwithout any major modifications.
Tools Used: Jack, Jack stands, Socket wrench, Socket set, Flat tip screwdriver, 2 gallons of gasoline
Install a Gas Tank
Park the car on a flat surface. Place a jack under the differential, which is the large, round object at the midpoint of the rear axle. Raise the car high enough to place jack stands under the axle. Lower the car on to the jack stands.
Place the new gas tank on the jack. Raise the tank high enough to connect the wiring for the sending unit. Slide the fuel lines on to the pipes.
Check the hose clamp over the pipe and the fuel lines. Tighten the connections with a flat tip screwdriver.
Check the hose clamp on the fuel fill hose. Push the fuel fill hose on to the back of the tank. Slide the hose clamp over the pipe and the hose. Tighten the hose clamp with a flat tip screwdriver.
Raise the jack to the bottom of the car. Tighten the two retaining straps in place with a socket wrench. Turn all four bolts until they are tight.
Raise the car with the jack. Pull the two jack stands out from underneath the axle. Lower the car to the ground. Pour two gallons of gasoline in to the fuel tank.
Turn the ignition key and hold down the accelerator pedal with your right foot. Once fuel has primed the line, the car will start.
Tips & Warnings
Inspect the fuel tank before installing. Ensure the sending unit is bolted on to the top of the tank. If the sending unit is not attached, it can be attached with little effort.
Use caution working around gasoline because it is highly flammable and toxic.
