How to Install a Headlight Switch on a 1966 Ford Galaxy

The 1966 Ford Galaxie was equipped with a total of four headlights. Two headlights were positioned vertically on each side of the grill. To operate the headlights, a single dashboard-mounted switch was used in conjunction with a knob. A defective switch typically has worn electrical connections, although a mechanical problem is also a possibility. Fortunately, many classic car parts suppliers offer a replacement switch at a reasonable cost and installation is fairly straightforward.

Tools Used: Wrench, Flathead screwdriver, Hammer

Install a Headlight Switch

Remove the negative cable from the battery with a wrench.

Pull the switch knob to the "ON" position.

Reach underneath the dashboard and depress and the knob release button of the bottom of the headlight switch, then pull the knob out of the switch from the front of the dashboard.

Insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver into the slot on the side of the switch bezel. The switch bezel is the metal ring that surrounds the switch assembly on the dashboard.

Tap on the screwdriver gently with a hammer to twist the bezel in a counterclockwise direction until the bezel detaches from the dashboard.

Pull the switch out of the underside of the dashboard.

Pull the electrical connector plug off the switch.

Push the electrical connector plug onto the replacement headlight switch.

Position the switch against the back of the dashboard.

Position the bezel onto the tip of the switch, then turn the bezel in a clockwise direction until the switch is secure. Tighten the bezel with the screwdriver and hammer if necessary.

Slide the switch knob into the center of the switch until the knob clicks.

Connect the battery cable.
