How to Install a Heater Hose on a 1966 Ford Mustang

A ruptured heater core (or box) can turn into a nightmare for Mustang owners. Antifreeze can leak out onto the carpet. The unit will have to be replaced, but fortunately, this is a job you can do in your garage. While you're at it, you should probably replace your heater hoses as well. The hoses connect your '66 Mustang's engine to the intake manifold and water pump on the core.

Tools Used: Wrench, Slotted screwdriver

Install a Heater Hose

Turn off the engine, then go around to the front of your ride, and prop open the hood. Disconnect the negative ("-") battery cable with a wrench.

Drain the radiator about halfway down, or enough so that the bottom heater hose is exposed.

Take the heater box out from the dash. Locate the heater hoses, which run from the water pump and intake manifold to the engine.

Detach the hoses from the engine by loosening the hose clamps with a slotted screwdriver. Once you've removed the heater box itself by detaching the various components connected to it, lay it down on a workbench. Detach the hoses from the box by once again loosening the hose clamps.

Attach the replacement hoses to the heater box by tightening the hose clamps, then slide the hoses through the firewall. Once you've replaced all the components that were attachede to the box, reconnect the hoses to the engine.
