The thermostat on a 1967 Oldsmobile Cutlass controls the coolant flow through the engine. Sitting inside the thermostat housing, the thermostat remains closed when the engine is below optimal operating temperature, preventing the coolant from flowing through the engine. Once the Cutlass's engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens and allows the coolant to pass through the engine in order to remove excess heat and stabilize the engine temperature. It's a good idea to replace the thermostat every time you work on the Cutlass's cooling system.
This process does not require tools.
Locate the Thermostat
Open the hood on the Cutlass by hand. Support the hood with the prop rod.
Look at the top of radiator, located in the very front of the engine well. Locate the upper radiator hose that comes off the upper right corner of the radiator.
Follow the radiator hose to the engine, where it connects to the thermostat housing, bolted to the engine intake manifold. The thermostat is inside the thermostat housing.
