How to Remove the AC Drier on a 1977 Chevrolet Corvette

The drier on the 1977 Corvette is located in line between the compressor and the evaporator. The high-pressure hose -- the smaller of the two -- runs from the compressor to the drier, then, on the other side of the drier, the low-pressure hose -- the larger of the two -- runs from the drier to the evaporator. When you open the system, you must replace the orifice tube, or O-tube, which is located in the end of the high-pressure hose, just before the evaporator.

Tools Used: Set of line wrenches, Set of sockets

Remove the AC Drier

Take the vehicle to a certified shop and have them evacuate the system. You must evacuate the Freon with a reclaimer, as it cannot be vented into the atmosphere, as per Federal mandates.

Remove the two hoses from the drier, using the appropriate line wrench. The drier is the round canister with one hose going into it and the other coming out the other side.

Unbolt the drier from its bracket, then remove it from the engine compartment.

Tips & Warnings

Always replace the O-rings on the hoses at the drier -- never use the old O-rings. The new drier should come with new O-rings. If not, purchase the appropriate O-rings for the air conditioning system (do not use O-rings you have lying around, unless you know they are for air conditioning).

The air conditioning system is under pressure. Do not loosen the hoses on any of the components without evacuating the system.

Do not evacuate Freon into the atmosphere.
