How to Remove the Ignition Switch on a 1974 Chevrolet Blazer

The 1974 Chevrolet Blazer was equipped with a one-piece ignition switch and lock cylinder assembly. The Blazer's ignition switch was installed on the side of the steering column rather than into the face of the dashboard as with some other vehicles. Removing the ignition switch is still a relatively straightforward job, but the steering wheel must first be removed.

Tools Used: Wrench, Flathead screwdriver, Steering wheel puller tool

Remove the Ignition Switch

Loosen the clamp on the battery end of the negative battery cable with a wrench and lift the cable off of the battery. Pry the horn button off of the center of the steering wheel with a flathead screwdriver to reveal the steering wheel's retaining nut.

Hold the steering wheel stationary and remove the steering wheel's retaining nut with a wrench to reveal three nuts that surround the receiving cup. Remove the receiving cup's three securing nuts with a wrench.

Lift the receiving cup out of the steering column, followed by the large spring behind the cup. Use a steering wheel puller tool to disconnect the steering wheel from the steering column. Rotate the ignition switch with the key to the "RUN" position.

Insert the tip of a small flathead screwdriver into the vertical slot just to the right of the threaded rod in the center of the steering column. This is the same threaded rod from which the steering wheel's retaining nut was removed. Press downward on the spring latch located on the end of the ignition switch, then pull the switch out of the steering column.
