How to Remove the Ignition Switch on a 1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass

The Ignition Switch of your 1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass enables the proper distribution of power and electricity to various parts of your car. In addition, it prevents car accessories from draining the battery when the engine is idling or parked for a long time. However, the most important function of the ignition switch is connecting the starter to the battery, enabling the transmission of electricity from the battery to the starter, which results to the easy starting of the engine. In most cases, the wiring connections and major components of the ignition switch cause the malfunction. When this happens, you must remove the whole ignition switch assembly and replace it with a new one.

Tools Used: Screw driver, Wrench, Ignition switch

Remove the Ignition Switch

Pop the hood. Unscrew the bolts with a wrench and pull out the negative and positive cables of the car battery. Detach the upper battery cover by unhooking the clips with a flathead screwdriver. Pull out the battery carefully and place it in a safe area together with the bolts and cover tray.

Position yourself in the driver's seat. Stabilize the steering wheel by locking it while the front tires are positioned straight forward. Insert the key in the ignition and turn it into Lock mode.

Unscrew the bolts of the dash board and center steering wheel covers with a wrench. Carefully pull out the covers to expose the ignition switch assembly. Disconnect the horn wires and unscrew all the nuts found under them. Make a mark on the proper position of the wheel spline so you'll have a guide where to correctly reattach the switch.

Position the steering wheel in a straight direction. Locate the ignition shaft installed under the assembly. Unscrew the shaft bolts and pull it out carefully.

Disconnect all the wirings connected at the back portion of the ignition switch. Unscrew the main nuts of the ignition switch and remove it carefully. Hold the ignition key and insert the key to activate the lock position mode. Free the cylinder located inside the ignition assembly by pressing the retaining pin using a pointed screwdriver. Turn the key to the off position to release the cylinder.

Install the cylinder to the new ignition switch while making sure it is lined up correctly. Reconnect all the wirings to the ignition switch and properly slide it back to the assembly where you made a mark. Screw back all the bolts and make sure there are no movements within the assembly.

Reattach the steering wheel and dash board covers. Reconnect the cables of the battery. Insert the key to the new ignition switch and test if it works.
