How to Remove Steering Column on 1977 Chevrolet Camaro

Removing the steering column from a 1977 Camaro is a somewhat complicated task because you are working under the dashboard. There are myriad wires and heater ducts that must remain intact and cannot be damaged in the process. The steering column can be removed in one piece without removing the steering wheel or any other parts.

Tools Used: 1/2-inch wrench, 1/4-inch socket, 5/8-inch socket and ratchet

Remove Steering Column

Raise the hood and use the the 1/2-inch wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable end.

Slide the driver's seat back as far as it will go to give you room to work. Remove the dash panel and the vent duct under the steering wheel column using the 1/4-inch socket.

Locate the wire pack coming from the column about 3 inches from the bottom on the top side of the housing. Unhook the wire connection from the column.

Remove the bolt that connects the steering column to the steering rod using the 1/2-inch wrench. The bolt is located at the very bottom of the column on the column knuckle.

Use a 5/8-inch socket and ratchet to loosen the bolts that connect the column to the underside of the dash. Use one hand to remove the bolts and the other hand to hold the column so it doesn't drop until you're done.

Remove the column from the vehicle once it drops. Hold the column firmly with both hands and lift it up and out from under the dash.
