How to Remove Window Crank on 1969 Chevrolet Camaro

On a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, the windows open and close the old fashioned-way: with a metal window crank. After repeated use, the window cranks can wear out or break. Removing a window crank for replacement, a moderately easy task, takes about 15 minutes. You also must take off the window crank to access the door panel or inner window components.

Tools Used: Painter's tape, Window crank handle removal tool or wide flat-blad screwdriver

Remove Window Crank

Tape around the door handle on the door panel to protect the panel from minor scuffs or scrapes. Use blue painter's tape, which removes easily without leaving behind a residue.

Slide the window crank handle removal tool underneath the crank's knob until you feel it fall into a notch behind the window handle. The crank attaches to the door via a snap ring with an open end. If installed correctly, the opening of the snap ring will face the window crank knob.

Push the window crank tool against the window crank snap ring until the ring slides off. Pull off the window crank by hand.

If using a screwdriver, pry one end of the snap ring loose. Hold down the trim underneath the window handle, and push until you free the snap ring.

Gently peel the painter's tape off the door panel.

Tips & Warnings

When pushing off the window crank snap ring, take care not to slip and damage the door panel underneath.
