How to Replace Brake Booster on 1966 Chevrolet Impala

The 1966 Chevrolet Impala is built on the General Motors B-body platform. The B-body platform is shared with Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick. The Impala is available with front drum brakes or optional front disc brakes. Power assist is provided by a vacuum booster, mounted to the firewall, between the brake pedal and the hydraulic master cylinder. A bad power booster will show itself as an extremely hard brake pedal.

Tools Used: Wrench set

Replace Brake Booster

Park the Impala on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake.

Look underneath the dash at the top of the brake pedal. You will see where the rod from the power booster connects to the pedal. Pull the clip off of the end of the pin that connects the pedal to the rod. Remove the pin.

Move to the engine compartment. Pull the vacuum hose off of the vacuum booster. Use a wrench to remove the two nuts that hold the master cylinder onto the booster. Carefully pull the master cylinder off of the booster. Do not disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder.

Remove the two nuts that hold the booster onto the firewall. Pull the booster away from the firewall, and remove the booster.

Mount the new booster onto the firewall. The booster comes with the rod that connects to the brake pedal. Install and tighten the nuts. Mount the master cylinder onto the booster. Install and tighten the nuts. Attach the vacuum hose to the booster.

Move to the passenger compartment, and line up the pedal rod with the brake pedal, insert the pin and clip.

Tips & Warnings

Make sure the vacuum hose to the booster is in good shape.
