How to Replace a Fuel Pump on a 1974 BMW 2002

BMW 2002s are collector cars significant in that many of their owners still drive them daily. A high-mileage daily driver like the '74 2002 needs some tender loving maintenance to stay running. If your 2002's fuel pump is original equipment, you should consider replacing it. A fuel pump pushing 40 years of service could go at any time. Many 1974 BMW 2002 owners keep a spare new fuel pump in the trunk of the car along with a tool kit. Knowing how to replace the fuel pump on your own might rescue a road trip from disaster someday. At the least it will save the cost of a tow and repair bill from a mechanic.

Tools Used: Metric socket set, Socket wrench, Open-end metric wrenches, Jack, Jack stands, Drain pan, Rags

Replace a Fuel Pump

Park the 2002 on level ground. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Raise the rear of the 2002 using the jack and support the rear of the car on jack stands. Crawl under the rear of the 2002 and locate the fuel pump on the underside of the trunk floor. Loosen the two fuel lines that run into the pump with an appropriate open-end wrench.

Slide a drain pan under the pump and remove the fuel line from each end. Allow the fuel from the lines to drip into the pan for several minutes. Pull the pump free of the metal bands that hold it to the body of the car and pour any fuel left in the pump into the drain pain.

Insert a new fuel pump into the metal bands that hold it to the body of the car. Place a new washer between the pump and each fuel line. Tighten the nuts on the lines. Remove the jack stands and lower the car. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Tips & Warnings

Use caution when working with gasoline. It is highly flammable, and its fumes are noxious. Wipe up any spilled gasoline immediately and dispose of any residual gasoline properly.
