How to Replace the Headlight Switch on a 1968 Ford Mustang

Most Mustangs manufactured from the early 60s to the 80s have the headlight switch in the dashboard. The 68 Mustang has a pull type switch. The pull type switch simply pulls out and has to be turned to switch on the inside lights or the dashboard lights. A dimmer switch button is mounted on the floor board, which changes the headlights from low beam to high beam. The newer models have these controls in the steering column.

Tools Used: ½-inch wrench, Channel Lock pliers, Flat-head screwdriver, small, Phillips-head screw driver

Put a Headlight Switch

Raise the hood and set the hood prop. Use the 1/2-inch wrench to loosen the nuts on the battery cable ends and remove the cable from the posts by hand.

Remove the screws that secure the dashboard cover with the Phillips-head screw driver. The screws are located on the drivers side of the vehicle below the steering column. This gives you access to the headlight switch wires.

Use the flat-head screw driver to unhook the wire plug from the backside of the light switch behind the dash. Use the screw driver to pull back on the wire plug latch and pull the wire plug apart by hand.

Grasp the knob of the headlight switch, push it in and quickly pull out on it. This allows the knob and rod to completely release so the knob can be removed from the switch.

Use the channel lock pliers to grasp the ring around the switch and turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove the ring. Reach under the dash and pull the switch out.

Place the new switch in the dash the same way the old one was removed. Push the switch through the hole on the dashboard and screw on the locking ring. Tighten it with the channel lock pliers.

Attach the wire plug to the back side of the switch. Push the wire plug completely onto the switch until it locks in place. Insert the new knob and button by pushing the rod end of the knob into the slot in the switch until it also locks. It's locked when you can no longer pull the knob out completely.
