How to Replace an Impeller on a 1974 Johnson Outboard

The impeller on your 1974 Johnson outboard is part of the water pump assembly, which helps pull water into the engine in order to keep the engine cool. If your impeller becomes damaged, it will result in long-term damage to the engine of your Johnson outboard because the engine will overheat substantially. To avoid this, you need to replace the impeller as soon as you notice it may be damaged. The job should take you about two hours to complete.

Tools Used: Socket wrench, Gear lube, Drain pan, Water pump impeller, Phillips screwdriver

Replace an Impeller

Place a drain pan underneath the outdrive. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw attached to the drain plug. Remove the drain plug and drain the gear lube into the pan.

Locate the mounting bolts that secure the outdrive in place below the upper unit of the engine. Use a socket wrench to remove the mounting bolts and lift the outdrive away from the upper unit. Place the outdrive on a clear work space.

Remove the bolts that fix the outdrive casing in place. Remove the casing to gain access to the water pump.

Lift the impeller away from the water pump and replace it with a new one. Place the outdrive casing back over the water pump and secure in place with the bolts. Move the outdrive back under the upper unit and secure it in place with the bolts.

Place a gear lube insertion tube on to the drain hole at the bottom of the outdrive. Fill the outdrive with gear lube. Once the outdrive is full, reattach the drain plug and secure it in place with the screw.
