How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket on a 1975 Chevrolet Camaro

The oil pan gasket on the 1975 Chevy Camaro prevents oil leaks between the engine block and the oil pan. Fortunately for early model Camaro owners, Chevy used big displacement engines with plenty of room to work on the vehicle. Changing the oil pan requires basic hand tools and a small amount of automotive repair know-how.

Tools Used: Adjustable wrench, Oil drain pan, Socket set, Scraper, RTV silicone gasket sealer, Four quarts 10W30 motor oil, Funnel

Replace the Oil Pan Gasket

Open the oil pan drain plug with an adjustable wrench and drain all four quarts of oil from the oil pan into a drainage pan. Place the oil pan plug back into the oil pan to prevent losing it.

Remove the bolts that secure the oil pan to the bottom of the engine block with a socket and ratchet. Even with the bolts removed, the oil pan may stick in place because of the silicone used to seal the oil pan gasket.

Slide a scraper between the oil pan and the engine block and force it around the edge until the pan breaks free from the engine block.

Slide the oil pan backward to remove it from the Camaro. Be careful of the pickup tube inside the pan.

Scrape the bottom of the engine block and the mating surface of the oil pan with a metal scraper to remove any silicone or gasket material.

Place a bead of silicone RTV gasket sealer around the mating surface of the oil pan and let it sit for 20 minutes.

Place the new gasket on top of the RTV silicone and place a second bead of RTV silicone gasket sealer on top of the gasket. Let it sit for 20 minutes before proceeding.

Slide the oil pan in place, making sure not to scrape silicone on any part of the engine or transmission as you do.

Push straight up on the oil pan and secure all four corners of the pan with bolts.

Insert and tighten the rest of the bolts in a crisscross motion, going from left to right.

Pour four fresh quarts of 10W30 motor oil into the engine.
