How to Replace the Starter on a 1972 GMC Sprint

Replacing the starter motor in the 1972 GMC Sprint may save you a large repair bill, and access to the starter is very straightforward. The Sprint, a cross between a truck and a car, left the factory in 1972 with a 250-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine, a 307 or 350 V-8 small block or one of two big-block options: the 402 or the 454. The starter in all versions is on the passenger side of the engine and uses the same two-bolt mounting system.

Tools Used: Wrench set, Jack, Jack stands, Socket set

Put a Starter

Open the hood of your Sprint and locate the negative battery terminal. Remove the negative cable using a wrench, and set the cable aside, isolating it from the battery.

Raise the front of your Sprint off the ground with a jack then position a set of jack stands under the frame rails of the car to support it. Locate the starter from under the passenger side of the car.

Locate the electrical terminals on the back of the starter solenoid, mounted on top of the starter motor. Mark the wires using pieces of masking tape and a marker, so you can re-install them in their correct positions on the new starter. Remove the retaining nuts on the starter solenoid with a socket and ratchet, and then disconnect the wires from the starter.

Locate the two starter mounting bolts at the front of the starter and remove them with a socket and ratchet. Lower the starter out of the engine compartment and set it aside. Position the new starter in place on the engine, install the two mounting bolts and tighten them with the socket and ratchet.

Install the wiring connections on the back of the new starter solenoid. Install the retaining nuts on the terminals and tighten them with a socket and ratchet. Don't over-tighten them, or you'll risk breaking the plastic solenoid case.

Raise the front of the car off the jack stands with the jack and remove the stands from under the car. Lower the car to the ground. Install the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal. Tighten the retaining bolt.
