1970 Lincoln Continental Mark 3 Water Pump Removal & Installation

The 1970 Lincoln Continental Mark 3 luxury sedan belong to a generation that spanned 1970 to 1992. That is 22 years of the same body design and same engine components. Over this period, very little changed on the Mark 3, including the design and function of the water pump. If the water pump stopped working, the engine would not get the necessary coolant it needed to keep the engine cool. This would result in engine overheating.

Tools Used: Drain pan, Ramp, Pliers, Socket set, Metal scraper, Water pump gasket, Funnel

Water Pump Removal & Installation

Drive the Mark 3 onto a set of ramps and secure the parking brake.

Place a drain pan under the radiator and open the petcock valve using a pair of pliers. Drain the coolant into the drain pan and then close the petcock valve.

Locate the tensioner pulley on the front engine block between the power steering pump and the water pump. Loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley with a socket and ratchet and push the tensioner pulley down to relieve tension on the drive belt. Pull the drive belt off the water pump.

Loosen the band clamp securing the radiator hose to the water pump with a pair of pliers. Pull the radiator hose off the water pump.

Remove the four bolts that secure the pulley to the front of the water pump with a socket and ratchet. Pull the pulley off the water pump.

Remove the four bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block with a socket and ratchet. Pull the water pump away from the engine block.

Clean the gasket material off the engine block with a metal scraper.

Place the O-ring supplied with the water pump onto the back end of the pump (the end that goes into the engine block) and lubricate the O-ring with coolant.

Place the gasket onto the back end of the water pump and place the water pump against the engine block. Secure the pump to the block with the four bolts, socket and ratchet.

Push the water pump pulley onto the spline on the front end of the pump and secure it with the four bolts, socket and ratchet.

Place the drive belt over the water pump pulley. Push the tensioner pulley upward to create tension on the drive belt and secure it by tightening the bolt in the center of the pulley with a socket and ratchet.

Slide the radiator hose back onto the water pump and secure it with the band clamp and pliers.

Open the filler cap on the top of the radiator, place a funnel into the hole and drain the coolant back into the radiator. Close the cap once finished.
