1972 Ford 302 Rear Seal Removal Instructions

The 1972 Ford 302 V-8 engine was fitted with a seal that fits around the back of the crankshaft. When this seal fails, oil will leak out of the back of the engine. Unfortunately, a defective seal must be replaced, as it cannot be repaired. The most challenging portion of the replacement process is accessing and removing the seal. Although some disassembly is required, the disassembly is not extensive and the upper portion of the engine need not be disturbed.

Tools Used: Large container, Wrench, Socket wrench, Needle-nose pliers

Remove Rear Seal

Drain the engine oil into a large container by removing the plug at the bottom of the oil pan with a wrench.

Remove the bolts that secure the oil pan to the bottom of the engine with a socket wrench, then remove the pan to expose the crankshaft and the connecting rods that are attached to the crankshaft.

Remove as many connecting rod cap nuts as possible with a socket wrench. Each connecting rod cap is secured with two nuts. Pull the caps off of the connecting rods.

Rotate the engine by turning the bolt in the center of the vibration damper in a clockwise direction with a wrench to access the remaining connecting rod cap nuts, then remove the nuts and the remaining caps.

Loosen, but do not remove, the bolts that secure the crankshaft caps to the bottom of the engine with a socket wrench to lower the back of the crankshaft enough to access the rear seal.

Pull the rear seal off of the back of the crankshaft with needle-nose pliers.
