1974 Chevrolet Blazer Steering Column Ignition Switch Removal

The ignition switch mounted on the steering column of a 1974 Chevrolet Blazer begins the starting process, connecting the battery to the starter motor, which will turn over the engine. The switch has contacts in it, which can wear down over time. Eventually, the switch will no longer work, and when it does, the starting process will not be able to begin with the key. To fix the issue, first remove the switch from the steering column, which should take about an hour.

Tools Used: 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Phillips screwdriver

Remove Steering Column Ignition Switch

Unscrew the trim panel located beneath the steering column using the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the panel, and put it to the side.

Unbolt the steering column from the dashboard with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set. Carefully lower the column down so you can access the top of the switch.

Put the key in the ignition switch, and turn it to the "lock" position. Remove the screws holding the switch in place using the Phillips screwdriver. Take the switch off of the column and away from the Blazer.
