The impeller water pump on your 1980 Chrysler boat works by pulling water in to the engine to keep it cool. Over time, the components of the water pump can become worn and damaged, resulting in the water pump not working and causing your engine to continually overheat and eventually breakdown. To avoid this expensive problem, you should replace the water pump as soon as you notice it may have stopped working properly.
Tools Used: Wrench set, Screwdriver set, Water pump, Drain pan, Gear lube
Install an Impeller Water Pump
Move to the steering wheel of your Chrysler boat and move the throttle to the forward position. This will give you access to the outdrive.
Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt that fixes the propeller to the outdrive. Lift the propeller away from the outdrive.
Place the drain pan at the bottom of the outdrive. Use a flat-head screwdriver drive to remove the screw attached to the drain plug at the bottom of the outdrive. Turn the screw in a counterclockwise direction and remove the plug from the outdrive. Drain the gear lube into the drain pan.
Remove the mounting bolts that attach the outdrive to the upper unit. Lift the outdrive away from the unit and move over to a clear work space. Take care not to damage any of the components when removing the outdrive.
Use the socket wrench to remove the four bolts that fix the water pump cover to the outdrive. Lift the cover away from the outdrive and place in a safe area for reattachment later. Slide the water pump away from the drive spindle and replace with a new water pump. Place the water pump cover back on the outdrive and secure it with the bolts.
Lift the outdrive back onto the upper unit and secure in place by reconnecting the mounting bolts. Reattach the propeller to the outdrive. Attach a gear lube insertion tube to the drain plug of the outdrive and fill the outdrive with lube. Connect the drain plug to the outdrive once it is full.
