1986 Ford F150 Distributor Pick Up Coil Installation Instructions

The ignition coil on a 1986 Ford F-150 delivers spark to the distributor on the engine. This coil is critical to the proper operation of the engine, because without it functioning properly, the spark component required for the engine won't work, and the engine won't work correctly either. If you've already removed the ignition coil on your engine and determined that it needs to be replaced, then the next step is to install the ignition coil for the distributor, which takes around 30 minutes to do.

Tools Used: 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Replacement ignition coil

Install Distributor Pick Up Coil

Locate the mounting bracket for the ignition coil, which is just to the left of the distributor on the engine block. Bolt the replacement ignition coil to the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

Locate the ignition coil wire running from the distributor. Push the ignition coil wire onto the terminal on the top of the ignition coil with a firm push until it clicks into place.

Locate the wiring harness for the ignition coil which is connected to both the starter relay and the distributor. Plug this harness into the receptacle on the top of the ignition coil.
