How to Adjust the Headlights on a 1977 Chevrolet Corvette

The method of adjusting the headlights is applicable for all Corvette C3 vintage models (1968 to 1982). The headlight assembly is similar on all of these years. The headlights on these cars are operated on a vacuum system that opens and closes the headlight panels. This model of Corvette has four headlights. The two outer bulbs are the low beams and the two inner bulbs are for high beam use.

Tools Used: Flat wall, Phillips screwdriver

Adjust Headlights

Position the car close to a flat facing wall and turn on the headlights, mark the center of the headlight beams with an X on the wall with masking tape.

Move the car approximately 25 feet from the wall on a level surface.

Start the engine and pull on the headlight switch located on the upper left-hand side of the dashboard. If this does not open the headlight assembly, pull the headlight vacuum bypass switch located at the bottom center of the dash just under the steering wheel.

Turn off the ignition but with the headlights still in the up and on position. Mark the wall again with an X with masking tape at the center of the light beam on the wall. This will give you a reference point of the changes you will need to make.

Locate the two openings on the outside edge of each headlight. Inside these openings, you will find the adjustment screws: one at the top and at one on the left side of the high beam (or inner bulbs) and on the right side of the low beam (or outer bulbs).

Adjust the headlights with a Phillips screwdriver to move the screws. For example, if you want to raise the headlight, turn the top adjustment screw clockwise. To lower, turn the top screw counter clockwise. To adjust the lights left or right, turn the side adjustment screw clockwise or counter clockwise as needed. Continue adjustment until the focal point reaches or moves from your original marks on the wall. Level each beam.

Start the car and press in the headlight switch or vacuum bypass switch, whichever method you used in step three to raise the headlight assemblies. This will activate the vacuum system to close and turn off the headlights. Turn off ignition.
