How to Change the Brake Pads on a 1979 Ford F-250

The 1979 Ford F-250 pickup truck had front wheel disc and rear wheel drum brakes. Since the front brakes do the majority of the work when the truck stops, the front pads need to be changed more often than properly adjusted rear shoes. As the pads clamp down on the rotor to stop the truck, they lose a small amount of pad material. After a period of time and thousands of stops, you'll have to replace the pads. If you have basic automotive maintenance skills and some tools, you can change the brake pads on a 1979 F-250 yourself.

Tools Used: Lug wrench, Wheel chocks, Floor jack, Jack stands (2), Drip pan, Brake cleaner, Socket set, White lithium grease, Caliper piston tool, Torque wrench

Change Brake Pads

Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels with a wrench. Do not remove them yet. Chock the left rear wheel to prevent the truck from moving. Lift the front end with a floor jack and support it on jack stands placed under the front frame.

Remove the front lug nuts and wheels by hand and put them off to the side.

Set a drip pan under the right front brake assembly and wash the brake thoroughly with brake cleaner to remove any leftover brake dust.

Unbolt the right front caliper with a socket set. Lift the caliper off the brake rotor and then pull the brake pads out of the caliper by hand.

Wash out the inside of the caliper with the brake cleaner. Lubricate the caliper slides with white lithium grease then push the caliper pistons back into the caliper with a caliper piston tool.

Insert the new brake pads. Slide the caliper down over the rotor by hand and bolt it in place with the socket set.

Move to the left front of the truck and perform Steps 3 through 6 on the left front brake assembly.

Reinstall the wheels and lug nuts by hand. Lower the F-250 off the jack stands.

Tighten the lug nuts to 140 ft.-lbs. with a torque wrench then move the chocks away from the rear wheels.
