How to Change a Key Switch on a 1974 Volkswagen

The 1974 Volkswagen is equipped with a key switch rather than a push-button design to start the engine. When the switch is engaged, an electric signal is sent to a solenoid, which allows the current from the battery to activate the starter motor. A defective key switch can therefore cause a problem even if the other starting components are in working order. Fortunately, replacement key switches, sometimes referred to as "ignition locks" or "lock cylinders," are readily available and can be installed in minutes.

Tools Used: Paper clip or similar thin wire

Change a Key Switch

Insert the ignition key into the key switch.

Pull the key switch with the ignition key to reveal a small access hole on the side of the key switch.

Insert a thin wire, such as a straightened paper clip, through the access hole, then push the wire into the hole to depress a hidden securing pin.

Pull the key switch with the key while simultaneously depressing the securing pin with the wire to release switch.

Guide the new key switch into its slot gently until the securing pin engages.
