How to Change the PVC Valve on a 1984 Ford F-150

The F-150 arrived in Ford's lineup in the 1975 model year. Nine year later, in 1984, the F-150 took over the entry-level slot once filled by the F-100. The 1984 F-150 had four gasoline engines available: a 300-cubic-inch in-line six-cylinder, a 302-cubic-inch V-8, a 351-cubic-inch V-8 and a 460-cubic-inch V-8. These four engines all have a positive crankcase ventilation valve that opens up when pressure builds up in the crankcase. This allows the toxic chemicals to circulate into the combustion chamber so the burning fuel and air mixture burns these chemicals before they reach the atmosphere.

Tools Used: New PCV valve

Change PVC Valve

Open the F-150's hood and find the PCV valve -- it's in the oil filler cap on V-8 engines and inserted in the front of the valve cover on six-cylinder models.

Pull the rubber hose(s) from the top of the PCV valve, with a slight twisting motion -- the six cylinder engine's PCV has two hoses and the V-8 engines have only one hose.

Grab the PCV valve and pull it upward with a slight twisting motion. Set a new PCV valve in the rubber grommet in the valve cover or oil filler cap and press it downward until it stops moving.

Press the rubber hose(s) onto the hose inlets on top of the new PCV valve.

Close the F-150's hood.
