How to Check an Ignition Switch on a 1977 Toyota Truck

The ignition switch is an essential feature on vehicles, and Toyota trucks are no different. On 1977 Toyota trucks, the switch can get stuck for various reasons. If this happens, you can get the switch unstuck in just minutes by checking a few common problems.

This process does not require tools.

Check an Ignition Switch

Make sure the key is pushed all the way into the key cylinder and turn it all the way to the left and then the right to attempt to get it working in these positions.

Make sure the shifter is in the Park position, and turn your steering wheel all the way to the left and then to the right. Do this to make sure the wheels are not in an awkward position that may hinder starting the ignition.

Spray the cylinder with a lubricant so the slot and key will work with less friction.

Remove the dashboard panels around the ignition to see if anything is restricting the switch's movement.

Insert a wire into the slot to see if anything is loose that keeps the coil from turning, or the key from being inserted completely.
