The only component on a 1965 Mustang that prevents debris from the gas tank from entering the engine is a fuel filter. Without the fuel filter, the engine would quickly become dirty and its performance and fuel mileage would both suffer. The fuel filter loses its effectiveness over time, and must be replaced as a part of regular maintenance. Locating the fuel filter is simple.
Tools Used: Pliers (if necessary)
Find the Fuel Filter
Remove the single wingnut located at the center of the top of the air cleaner. The wingnut can usually be unscrewed by hand. Use pliers for a stubborn one.
Grasp the base of the air cleaner assembly and lift the entire unit off of the engine.
Identify the fuel outlet line on the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located on the front of the driver's side of the engine block. There are two hoses, one metal and one rubber, attached to the side of the fuel pump. The metal hose is the pump's fuel outlet hose.
Trace the fuel pump's outlet hose from the fuel pump to the fuel filter. The metal hose attaches to a rubber hose at the top of the engine. Continue to trace that rubber hose until the tip of the hose meets a metal cylinder, approximately 3 inches in length. That metal cylinder is the fuel filter.
