After removal, rear drum brakes may seem complicated to install if the installer has no previous brake installation experience. However, the rear brakes on a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier can be installed in a few easy steps with no special tools required. If the other rear brake assembly is still complete, it can be used as a visual guide to aid the installation of the previously removed assembly.
Tools Used: Needle-nose pliers, Brake grease, Sandpaper
Install the Rear Brake
Install the parking brake lever on the new brake shoe and press the C-clip together with needle-nose pliers. Coat the contact surfaces of the backing plate with brake grease.
Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever. Place the brake assembly on to the backing plate. Install the parking brake strut and spring with needle-nose pliers. The brake assembly may need to be slightly raise in order to fit the strut and spring.
Install the primary brake shoe hold down pin and spring with needle-nose pliers. Attach the actuator link and lever to the secondary brake shoe.
Install the actuator lever return spring with needle-nose pliers. Install the secondary brake shoe hold down pin and spring with needle-nose pliers.
Install the return springs with needle-nose pliers. Remove glaze from the brake drum with a piece of sandpaper.
Center the brake shoe assembly and place the brake drum over the brake shoe assembly. The adjusting screw may need to be turned so the drum fits snugly over the assembly without the shoes dragging.
