The ignition switch in a 1977 Chevrolet Blazer is mounted on the right side of the steering column. This switch puts together two electrical contacts, which tells the starter motor to engage. This, in turn, begins the starting system for the engine. If the ignition switch goes out, then the starter will never get the signal, and the Blazer won't start. If you think your ignition switch is out, then you need to remove it from the column to repair it.
Tools Used: Phillips-head screwdriver, 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
Remove Ignition Switch
Look underneath the steering column to locate the trim panel below the column. Remove the trim panel from the dashboard with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Unbolt the steering column from the dash with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket.
Lower the column down from the dash and rest the steering wheel on your lap. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the Lock setting.
Unscrew the switch from the steering column. Lift it off of the column, then take it out of the Blazer.
