The El Camino was one of the first crossover vehicles ever built--it was a cross between a pickup and a car. A lot of the components in this vehicle, including the engines, can be found in the company's various truck models. When the El Camino begins to have starting problems, they're not usually caused by the battery or the ignition switch: Chances are, the malfunctioning part is the starter. To either replace the starter or to get it tested, you have to first remove the old one.
Tools Used: Jack, Jack stands, Open-end wrench set, 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set
Remove the Starter
Open the hood and disconnect the negative post from the battery, using an open-end wrench. Do the same for the positive post, then lift up the front of the car, using the jack, and set it down on the jack stands.
Locate the starter on the driver's side of the engine, where the engine connects to the transmission. Disconnect each wire from the starter, using an open-end wrench.
Unbolt the bracket from the side of the starter, using the ratchet, then remove the heat shield in the same manner (if so equipped).
Unbolt one bolt from the starter, using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Support the starter with one hand, then unbolt the remaining bolt; lower the starter carefully from the engine.
