How to Remove the Water Pump on a 1984 Ford Ranger

The water pump installed on the front of a 1984 Ford Ranger circulates coolant between the radiator and the engine, making sure that the coolant flows smoothly between the two. When the water pump goes out, the engine can potentially overheat, which can potentially damage the engine beyond repair. The fix is to remove the water pump and replace it with a new one, which can be done in about an hour with the right tools. First though, you have to remove the old water pump.

Tools Used: 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set, Open-end wrench set, Flathead screwdriver, Drain pan

Remove Water Pump

Open up the hood. Unbolt the fan shroud from the core support using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the cooling fan from the water pump with an open-end wrench, then remove the fan and the fan shroud.

Loosen the adjusting bolts on the power steering pump and the A/C compressor. Push in the power steering pump and pull the belt off of the water pump. Then push in the A/C compressor and pull that belt off of the water pump. Unbolt the pulley from the water pump using an open-end wrench.

Remove the hose clamp on the radiator hose to the water pump using the flathead screwdriver. Pull the radiator hose off of the water pump and allow it to drain into the drain pan. Unbolt the cam belt cover from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

Unbolt the water pump from the front of the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the water pump off of the engine, then away from the vehicle.
