The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve in your 1984 Mercedes C280 regulates the air flow from the car's exhaust to the intake manifold, thereby lowering the temperature during combustion. This, in turn, decreases the smog-producing nitrogen levels emited by your car, while increasing your overall gas mileage. As time goes on, the valve may start to malfunction and will need replacement.
Tools Used: Replacement EGR valve, Socket wrench, Clean cloth, New gasket, Penetrating oil
Replace EGR Valve
Park your car on a flat, stable surface and engage the parking brake. Prop open the hood and locate the EGR valve: look for a round, metal part with a hose attached to it, on the driver's side of the engine. Spray it down with a penetrating oil.
Detach the hose from the valve by gripping it and pulling it free. Then unbolt the valve from the engine with a socket wrench, then remove the valve.
Wipe down the valve's mounting surface with clean cloth. Place the new gasket on the replacement valve's bolts.
Install the replacement valve by reversing the previous steps. Make sure the bolts are tightened properly, before reattaching the hose.
