How to Replace an In-line Fuel Filter on a 1977 F-250 Ford V6

In 1977, the Ford F-250 was produced with a variety of different engines, including a V6. Back then, fuel wasn't filtered from the refinery very well, and a fuel filter was installed in-line between the gas tank and the carburetor to help filter out particulates. Replacing this filter should be done on a regular basis to avoid rough idle problems. This job can be done in about 15 minutes.

Tools Used: Small drain pan, Line wrench set, Replacement fuel filter, Non-hardening gas-proof sealer

Replace an In-line Fuel Filter

Pop the hood. Locate the fuel filter on the fuel line next to the carburetor. It's threaded in-line and connected to a hard gas line and a soft gas line. Place a drain pan underneath the fuel filter.

Remove the fuel filter from the fuel line using a line wrench set. Then pour out the contents of the fuel filter into the drain pan.

Apply non-hardening sealer to the threads of the replacement fuel filter. Thread the fuel filter into the fuel line, making sure that the arrow on the fuel filter points towards the carburetor and away from the gas tank. Tighten it in place using the line wrench set.

Start the truck. Make sure there are no leaks in the fuel system. If there are any, turn off the truck then re-tighten the fittings on the fuel filter using the wrenches.

Tips & Warnings

Never smoke or have an open flame nearby while you're working on the fuel system of a vehicle. If you do, you risk causing a fire and damaging yourself and the vehicle.
