How to Replace the Injectors on a 1984 Pontiac Fiero

Pontiac Fiero was manufactured between 1984 and 1988. During that time Pontiac installed three different engines into the Fiero: the 300 series throttle body, the 700 series throttle body and a multi-port fuel injection engine. The fuel injectors are in different locations on all three engine types. Refer to your owner's manual to learn which type of engine your Fiero has, then refer to the proper procedure below to replace the fuel injectors.

Tools Used: Flat head screwdriver, New Fiero fuel injectors, Socket wrench set

Replace the Injectors

300 Series Throttle Body

Locate the air filter in the engine compartment. The air filter rests in the air cleaner box. Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the air cleaner box from the engine compartment.

Locate the fuel injector heads and remove the electrical connectors by pinching the two tabs together and lifting. There will be a rail of either four or six fuel injectors under the air cleaner box, depending on the size of your engine.

Remove the fuel meter cover with the socket wrench. The cover on top of the fuel injectors has five mounting bolts.

Use a flat head screwdriver and pry out the fuel injectors. Remove the injectors and the small rubber O-rings at the top and the bottom of the fuel injector cavities.

Lubricate the new rubber O-rings with automatic transmission fluid and install them into the cavities with your fingers. Install the new injectors by following the removal steps in reverse order.

700 Series Throttle Body

Disconnect the electrical connectors to the fuel injector heads by squeezing the tabs on the connector and lifting off.

Remove the injector retainer screw and injector retainer using a flat head screwdriver.

Use the flat head screwdriver to pry the injector out of its cavity. Use a small pry bar to aid you if necessary.

Use your fingers to remove the upper and lower rubber O-rings from the cavity. Visually inspect the open cavity and lines for obstructions and clean with a shop rag if necessary.

Use automatic transmission fluid to lubricate the new rubber O-rings and install them with your fingers. Install the new injectors by following the removal steps in reverse order. Coat the injector retaining screws with locking compound and tighten them to 27 inch-pounds with a torque wrench.

Multi-Port Fuel Injection Engine

Use a socket wrench and flat head screwdriver remove the throttle body, air plenum and fuel rail assembly.

Use your fingers to turn the fuel injector retainer clips clockwise to release the injector. If the rubber O-ring seals do not lift out with the injector, remove them carefully with your fingers.

Lubricate the new O-rings with a small amount of engine oil using your fingers. Install them into the cavity with the new fuel injectors. Replace the injector retainer clips by turning them counterclockwise until they lock.

Replace the fuel rail, air plenum and throttle body using a socket wrench set and flat head screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

When working on a fuel system, keep open flames, sparks and heating elements well clear of the area. It's also a good idea to bleed the fuel system of pressure and have a dry chemical fire extinguisher handy.
