How to Install the Rear Spoiler on a 1986 Toyota Celica

The 1986 Toyota Celica featured a factory-installed rear spoiler as an option. If your car does not have the spoiler or you want to install a customized, aftermarket spoiler, you can attach it to the hatchback deck lid. The installation requires basic tools and you can perform this task in your driveway or garage.

Tools Used: Painter's tape, Tape measure, Marker, Drill, Drill bit, Silicone

Install the Rear Spoiler

Measure the width of the pedestals on the spoiler and measure the width of the hatchback deck lid to ensure the pedestals will fit squarely on the deck lid. Do not drill any holes in your deck lid until you are certain the spoiler fits.

Place the end of your tape measure at the end of the deck lid closest to the rear window glass and extend the tape measure to the back of the deck lid. Place a piece of painter's tape across the width of the deck lid approximately three-quarters of the way back from the glass. Place a mark on each side of the tape secured to the deck lid to mark the three-quarter-distance mark. This is where you will secure your spoiler.

Place your spoiler onto the tape and center it according to width on the deck lid. Mark the mounting location for each pedestal so you'll know where to drill.

Open the hatchback and disconnect the inner plastic shell; this will prevent drilling through the shell and will allow you to secure the bolts. Lower the deck lid.

Drill the mounting holes in the deck lid with a drill bit large enough to fit the mounting bolts. Remove the painter's tape from the deck lid.

Place the seals on the bottom of the pedestals, or place beads of silicone around the bottoms of the pedestals, and secure the pedestals to the deck lid. Thread the mounting bolts up through the bottom of the deck lid and tighten them with a ratchet. Place a bead of silicone around the bolts for added protection against water.

Secure the inner plastic panel to the inside of the hatchback.
