1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Driver's-Side Mirror Removal

The 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo used mirrors that mounted to the sheet metal of the driver's-side door. This is unlike most late-model vehicles that mount the mirrors at the front of the side window. To remove the driver's-side mirror, you first have to remove the inside door panel to gain access. Completing the task is somewhat time-consuming because you have to take the door apart.

Tools Used: Screwdriver, 9/16-inch socket

Remove Driver's-Side Mirror

Roll the window completely up. With the glass rolled up, you have access to the outside sheet metal of the driver's door once the panels are removed.

Remove the window roller handle by removing the screw on the side of the handle. With the screw removed, pull the handle off the knurled shaft.

Remove the arm rest. The bottom of the armrest has two 9/16-inch bolts that secure it to the door. Remove the bolts with a 9/16-inch socket.

Pull the door panel off the inside sheet metal of the door. The plastic panel has small tabs on the back that push into the door. To remove the door panel, start in the lower corner and pull the cover away from the sheet metal.

Locate the two 9/16 bolts that secure the mirror to the outside sheet metal of the door. They are located in the upper left corner of the door. Remove the two 9/16 bolts with a 9/16 socket. If you remove the bolts without holding the mirror, it will fall to the ground. It helps to have a second person to hold the mirror while you remove the bolts.
