How to Replace the Battery on a 1986 Ford Ranger

Replacing a vehicle's battery is a simple task that takes minimal tools. Signs that the battery in your Ford Ranger may need to be replaced include lights and radio that do not work, or a clicking noise from the engine when you turn the ignition. Batteries weigh between 30 to 40 pounds, so be sure you can lift that weight before you attempt changing the battery in your Ranger yourself.

Tools Used: Combination wrench, Wire brush, New battery

Replace Battery

Allow your Ford Ranger to cool for a half hour before beginning any work on it. Locate the hood release lever within the vehicle to open the hood.

Use a combination wrench to unscrew the nuts connecting the cable to the black cable first then remove the cable from the battery. Do the same for the red cable. Lift the battery from the Ranger and dispose of it following local regulations.

Use a wire brush to clean away any debris that is on the battery holder tray. This is important as it removes any corrosion or dirt that could affect the new battery's performance.

Install the new battery by placing it into the battery hold tray. Attach the red cable to the battery and then the black cable, making sure to attach the cables in that order. Use the combination wrench to tighten the nuts to secure the cables and connection to the battery. Close the hood.
