How to Replace the Headlight on a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass

The 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass uses sealed beam headlights, which require that you replace the entire headlight unit instead of just a bulb when the headlight fails. Though replacing an entire headlamp fixture is more work than changing just the bulb in a composite headlight, replacing a sealed beam headlight is not difficult. You can save the time and the money you'd have to pay a mechanic by changing the 1986 Olds Cutlass's sealed beam headlight yourself.

Tools Used: Phillips screwdriver, Replacement bulb H4656

Replace Headlight

Open the Cutlass's hood and remove the four screws from the headlight bezel with a Phillips screwdriver. The headlight bezel is the metallic cover around the outside of the headlight assembly.

Unscrew the four headlight assembly retaining screws using the Phillips screwdriver.

Pull the headlight forward to remove it from the body of the vehicle and pull the electrical plug off the back of the headlight assembly. Discard the old headlight.

Plug the electrical connector wire into the back of the new headlight .

Push the new headlight into the vehicle body and attach the four retaining screws.

Reattach the bezel with the four screws.

Repeat Step 2 through Step 7 with the other headlight.
