1987 Lincoln Continental Valve Cover Gaskets Replacement

The valve cover on the 1987 Lincoln Continental is made form a felt material and prevents oil from seeping out between the engine head and the valve cover. Due to constant heating and cooling cycles, the valve cover gasket eventually wears out. When this happens, you must replace the gasket with a new one to prevent oil leaks from starting or progressively getting worse once they have started.

Tools Used: Socket set, Scraper, Shop rags, RTV gasket sealer

Replace Valve Cover Gaskets

Remove the bolts that secure the valve cover gasket onto the engine head using a socket and ratchet.

Lift the valve cover off the engine head and remove all of the old gasket material from the mating surfaces of the valve cover and the engine head using a metal scraper and shop rag.

Place a bead of RTV gasket sealer on both mating surfaces and allow the RTV 20-minutes to cure before moving to the next step.

Place the valve cover gasket onto the engine head. The gasket has holes for the bolts to pass through. Make sure those holes match up with the holes in the engine head.

Place the valve cover on top of the gasket and secure it in place using the bolts, socket and ratchet. Tighten each bolt in an alternating fashion from one side to the next as you work your way down the valve cover.
